A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes.

Causes

  • Age : Age is the most common cause. Lens proteins denature and degrade over time, and this process is accelerated by diseases such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension
  • Trauma
  • Radiation : Ultraviolet light, specifically UVB, has been shown to cause cataracts
  • Genetics
  • Skin diseases : The skin and the lens have the same embryological origin and so can be affected by similar diseases. Those with atopic dermatitis and eczema occasionally develop shield ulcers cataracts.
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Inadequate vitamin C
  • Medications : Some medications, such as inhaled corticosteroids
  • Post-operative

Classification

Cataracts may be
– partial or complete,
– stationary or progressive, or
– hard or soft.
The main types of age-related cataracts are nuclear sclerosis, cortical, and posterior subcapsular

Signs & Symptoms

  • Reduction of vision.
  • Glare as their major symptoms

The severity of cataract formation, assuming no other eye disease is present, is judged primarily by a visual acuity test.

Prevention

– Avoid UVB exposure and smoking
– wearing sunglasses
– adequate intake of antioxidants (such as vitamins A, C, and E)

Treatment

Surgery is the only Treatment of cataract in allopathy, but complications like blindness after cataract surgery is the biggest risk for undergoing surgery

In homoeopathy there are some medicines which are very effective in cataract
Cineraria maritima is very helpful in preventing early cataract
